Former MLB pitchers join Dragons coaching staff

GLENS FALLS, N.Y.- The Glens Falls Dragons are excited and pleased to announce they will have two former Major League players joining the coaching staff in 2015.

Dave Palmer is a former professional baseball player who pitched for in the Major Leagues from 1978-1989. Palmer played for the Montreal Expos, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and Detroit Tigers over the course of his career. Palmer made an unusual kind of baseball history when he threw a five-inning perfect game against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 21, 1984. Palmer was a star pitcher for the Glens Falls High School baseball team until he graduated in 1976. He pitched alongside fellow future Major Leaguer Dave LaPoint. Palmer pitched in the Expos organization until 1985. He has recently returned to the area and will also be the new Head Coach for his former high school baseball team, the Glens Falls Indians. Jon Matlack is a former professional baseball player who pitched for the New York Mets and Texas Rangers. Matlack compiled 1,023 strikeouts and a 3.03 earned run average as one of the "Big Three" pitchers for the New York Mets were built around in the 1970s alongside Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman. Matlack was the 1972 National League Rookie of the Year with a 15-10 record and a 2.32 ERA. Matlack retired in 1983 and then coached in the San Diego Padres organization and the Chicago White Sox organization before he was hired as the pitching coach for the Detroit Tigers in 1996 and worked for the Tigers for 16 years. He then became the Houston Astros minor league pitching coordinator.

Owner Ben Bernard says this is so positive for the franchise to have these guys bring all this experience of many years of Major League Baseball on the field playing and coaching. This will definitely help recruiting players and will benefit our team so much by having a Major League experienced coaching staff.
